Indictment Withdrawn: 18 March 1999

Bernard Ntuyahaga, a former Major in the Rwandan Armed Forces, was indicted for his alleged role in the killing of Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana and ten Belgian UN peacekeepers in April 1994. The prosecution charged Ntuyahaga with direct responsibility for murder and serious violations of international humanitarian law.

In 1999, an ICTR Trial Chamber granted the prosecution’s motion to withdraw the indictment against Ntuyahaga following a request from Belgium to try him in its national courts. In 2007, the Brussels Criminal Court convicted Ntuyahaga of murder for his role in the killing of Prime Minister Uwilingiyimana and the ten Belgian UN peacekeepers and sentenced him to 20 years’ imprisonment.
