In May 2026, various universal and regional human rights bodies will examine States’ compliance with their human rights obligations through interactive dialogues, the consideration of State and civil society reports, and the review of individual complaints. At the United Nations (UN), one treaty body will hold a session to assess States’ progress toward protecting the rights of migrant workers and their families. Under the auspices of the UN Human Rights Council, the Working Group of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) will hold its 52nd session. Two of the Human Rights Council’s special procedures will also hold sessions, one on enforced and involuntary disappearances and the other on business and human rights. Four other special procedures and one investigative body will be conducting country visits to Colombia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Mongolia, and Poland. At the regional level, the following bodies will be holding sessions this month: the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR), and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR). For more information on each of the bodies and mechanisms mentioned below, please visit the Human Rights Oversight section of the CGLJ Online Resource Hub.

The sessions and country visits taking place in May are listed in the first section below, titled Hearings and Sessions. UN treaty body sessions may be watched via UN WebTV. The public hearings of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) may be viewed via the ACHPR Youtube channel and the IACtHR YouTube channel, respectively. Additionally, in May and June NGOs and civil society actors will have a number of opportunities to submit written information to human rights bodies and mechanisms that are focused on specific countries or human rights issues. These opportunities are included in the final section below, titled Calls for Input and Other Engagement Deadlines.

This post includes events occurring in May 2026, and submission deadlines for May and June 2026. For additional events and deadlines, please visit our Human Rights Calendar.
