In April 2026, various universal and regional human rights bodies will examine States’ compliance with their human rights obligations through interactive dialogues, the consideration of State and civil society reports, and the review of individual complaints. At the United Nations (UN), two treaty bodies will hold sessions to assess States’ progress toward eliminating racial discrimination and protecting individuals from torture. Three of the Human Rights Council’s special procedures and investigative bodies will hold sessions or conferences, and the UN Permanent Forums on Peoples of African Descent and on Indigenous Issues will both be in session. At the regional level, the following bodies will be holding sessions this month: the African Commission of Human Rights (ACHPR), the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR). Additionally, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will be hearing one case. The sessions and country visits taking place in April are listed in the first section below, titled Hearings and Sessions. UN treaty body sessions may be watched via UN WebTV. The public hearings of the African Commission of Human Rights (ACHPR), the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) may be viewed via the ACHPR Youtube page, the ACERWC YouTube channel, the IACtHR YouTube channel, and the ECtHR website, respectively.Additionally, in April and May NGOs and civil society actors will have a number of opportunities to submit written information to human rights bodies and mechanisms that are focused on specific countries or human rights issues. Hearings and Sessions

United Nations

UN Treaty Bodies

In April, two UN treaty bodies are convening. The full schedule of treaty body sessions can be viewed on the OHCHR Human Rights Mechanisms Calendar. The public activities of the treaty bodies, including constructive dialogues held as part of State party reviews, are webcast on UN WebTV. For information about in-person participation of civil society in the public activities of the treaty bodies, visit the UN’s Indico system.

Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) is scheduled to hold its 117th session from April 13 to May 1. During this session, the CERD will consider State reports from Burkina Faso, Cuba, Cyprus, Serbia, Slovenia, Uzbekistan, and Tonga; and follow-up reports from Albania, Argentina, Brazil, Italy, Qatar, and Turkmenistan. A provisional agenda and a program of work are available on the session page. Guidance for civil society, NGOs, and NHRIs is available on the Committee’s webpage. Registration is open for all in-person attendees. All public meetings of the Committee are also generally webcast live on UN WebTV.

Committee Against Torture

The Committee Against Torture (CAT) is scheduled to hold its 84th session from April 13 to May 1. During this session the CAT will consider State reports from Gabon, Italy, Pakistan, and Tajikistan; and lists of issues prior to reporting for Brazil, Colombia, Kazakhstan, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, and Switzerland. A Program of Work and an information note for civil society actors are available on the session page. Registration for in-person attendance is open via the UN’s Indico platform. Other UN Events Relating to Human Rights

  • The UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD) is scheduled to hold its 5th Session April 14 to 17 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. This year’s theme will be “Expanding the human rights of people of African descent under the Second International Decade for People of African Descent.” A provisional agenda and program of work draft are available on the session page. All interested stakeholders who are interested in participating in person are required to register by April 8 via the UN’s Indico platform. The 5th session will also be broadcasted via UN Web TV with interpretation available.
  • The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII) will hold its 25th session at UN Headquarters in New York April 20 to May 1. This year’s theme will be “Ensuring Indigenous Peoples’ health, including in the context of conflict.” A proposed agenda is available on the session webpage. Participation in the UNPFII is open to Member States, the UN and other intergovernmental organizations, Indigenous Peoples’ Organizations (IPOs), accredited academia, and Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) in consultative status with ECOSOC.  Indigenous parliamentarians and National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) may also be invited to attend.
  • The UN will be holding a Conference on Humanitarian Action, Remedy, and Responsibility in unilateral sanctions environment on April 9 and 10 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The purpose of this conference is to provide a forum to discuss the draft Guiding principles on humanitarian action in the face of unilateral sanctions, Guiding principles on effective remedy and responsibility in unilateral sanctions environment and a Commentary thereto, and to address the most important aspects of interaction of different categories of states, private actors, delivery of humanitarian assistance, other types of humanitarian action, from the perspective of international law. Registration is open via the UN’s Indico system.

African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) will hold its 87th Ordinary Session from April 24 to May 20 in Banjul, Gambia. The theme of this session is “2026 Year of Water Sustainability: Assuring Sustainable Water Availability & Safe Sanitation System to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.” The public portion of the session will be from May 11 to 20. The deadline to register to participate or make a statement is April 11.

African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child

According to the Communiqué on its 46th Ordinary Session, the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) is scheduled to hold its 47th Ordinary Session from April 17 to 25, 2026 in Maseru, Kingdom of Lesotho. Interested participants may secure their participation through the accreditation process.

European Court of Human Rights

The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will hold a hearing in the case of S.O v. Spain (no. 5742/22) on April 1 at 9:15 am at the Human Rights Building in Strasbourg, France. Those who have pre-registered may view the Court hearings in person. Alternatively, Court hearings may also be viewed via webcast.

Inter-American Court of Human Rights

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) is scheduled to hold its 188th session from April 13 to 24. Agenda and more information forthcoming.

Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women

The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has issued a call for comments to inform its drafting of a general recommendation on gender stereotypes. Those interested in submitting comments may do so through the CEDAW online submission system. Deadline May 6.

Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) invites inputs to inform its work on elaborating a draft general comment on the Application of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Situations of Armed Conflicts. Deadline May 15.

UN General Assembly: Human Rights Council

Universal Periodic Review

In preparation for the 53rd session of the Universal Periodic Review in November 2026, the UPR is accepting written submissions from civil society on: Suriname, Greece, Samoa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Hungary, Papua New Guinea,, Tajikistan, United Republic of Tanzania, Antigua and Barbuda, Eswatini, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, Ireland, and United States of America. Deadline April 10.*

*Please Note: “Regarding the review of the United States of America, please be informed that, in accordance with established modalities, only those organizations that contributed to the 2025 pre-session UPR reports of the USA will be invited to submit an update, as this forms part of the continuation of that exercise. No new call for contributions will be opened. The Secretariat will not admit additional organizations and will not produce new pre-session documentation. Updates provided by eligible organizations will be uploaded as appropriate.”

  • The 5th session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD) will take place in Geneva, Switzerland starting April 14, 2026. All interested participants must register by Wednesday, April 8.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the 2026 report of the Secretary-General on the Rights of Persons belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, to be presented at the 81st session of the General Assembly. The High Commissioner is seeking relevant information to ensure the realization of the rights of persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities. Deadline April 13.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the preparation of their 2026 report on “Promotion and protection of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Africans and of people of African descent against excessive use of force and other human rights violations by law enforcement officers through transformative change for racial justice and equality.” Deadline April 13.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the 2026 report of the Secretary-General on intimidation and reprisals for cooperation with the UN. Deadline April 15.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input for the 2026 report of the United Nations Secretary-General on the implementation of the program of activities under the Second International Decade for People of African Descent. Deadline April 17.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the 2026 report of the Secretary-General on combating intolerance, negative stereotyping, stigmatization, discrimination, incitement to violence and violence against persons, based on religion or belief. Deadline April 20.
  • The UN Intergovernmental Working Group on older persons has issued a call for input to inform deliberations on the general framework and guiding principles of the human rights of older persons, in preparation for the first session of the working group. Deadline April 22.
  • In preparation for its 15th session, the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights has issued a call for session proposals. Contributions may be given via this form. Deadline April 24.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking information related to “concrete actions for the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance and the comprehensive implementation of and follow-up to the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, covering the period from June 2025 to June 2026. Deadline April 30.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input regarding good practices and examples of North-South, South-South and triangular cooperation for the advancement of human rights, including the right to development. Deadline May 18.

The AfCHPR has issued a call for contributions to a survey that will inform its development of a Strategic Plan for 2026-2028. No deadline specified.
