In March 2026, various universal and regional human rights bodies will assess States’ compliance with their human rights obligations through interactive dialogues, the consideration of State and civil society reports, country visits, and the review of individual complaints. At the United Nations (UN), three treaty bodies will hold sessions to assess States’ progress in securing civil and political rights, rights of persons with disabilities, and protecting individuals against enforced disappearances. The Human Rights Council will adopt the Universal Periodic Review outcomes for 13 countries. Four of the special procedures will be conducting country visits to Mexico, Colombia, Armenia, Brazil and two other special procedures will hold sessions. At the regional level, the following bodies will be holding sessions this month: the African Court of Human Rights (AfCHPR), the European Committee on Social Rights (ECSR), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR). Additionally, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will be hearing two cases. The sessions and country visits taking place in March are listed in the first section below, titled Hearings, Sessions, and Country Visits. UN treaty body sessions may be watched via UN WebTV. The public hearings of the African Court of Human Rights (AfCHPR), the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR), and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) may be viewed via the AfCHPR’s YouTube page, the IACHR’s YouTube channel, the IACtHR’s YouTube channel, and the ECtHR’s website, respectively.

Additionally, in March and April NGOs and civil society actors will have a number of opportunities to submit written information to human rights bodies and mechanisms that are focused on specific countries or human rights issues. These opportunities are listed in the final section below, titled Calls for Input and Other Engagement Deadlines.

Hearings, Sessions, and Country Visits

United Nations

UN Treaty Bodies

In March, three UN treaty bodies are convening. The full schedule of treaty body sessions can be viewed on the OHCHR Human Rights Mechanisms Calendar. The public activities of the treaty bodies, including constructive dialogues held as part of State party reviews, are webcast on UN WebTV. For information about in-person participation of civil society in the public activities of the treaty bodies, visit the UN’s Indico system.

Human Rights Committee

The Human Rights Committee is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) by its States parties. This Committee is scheduled to hold its 145th session in Geneva, Switzerland from March 2 to 19. During this session the Committee will consider the reports of Andorra, Canada, Chad, Republic of Moldova, and Slovakia; follow-up reports of Botswana, Cambodia, and Ukraine; lists of issues prior to reporting for Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czechia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hungary, Mexico, and Senegal; and a list of issues for Rwanda. Despite the UN’s liquidity situation, these dates are confirmed. Members of civil society who wish to attend the session must register via the UN’s Indico platform. Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is scheduled to hold its 34th session in Geneva, Switzerland from March 9 to 27. During this session, the CRPD will consider initial reports from Guinea-Bissau, Lesotho, Liberia, Marshall Islands, Pakistan, Samoa; lists of issues for Colombia, Iceland, Ireland, Panama, and Trinidad and Tobago; and lists of issues prior to reporting for Cyprus, and Luxembourg. Despite the UN’s liquidity situation, these dates are confirmed. A Program of Work and an information note for stakeholders are available on the session page. Registration is open for all in-person attendees. All public meetings of the Committee are also generally webcast live on UN WebTV.

Committee on Enforced Disappearances

The Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) is scheduled to hold its 30th session in Geneva, Switzerland from March 9 to March 19. During this session the CED will consider first reports from Malawi and Samoa; reports on additional information from Ecuador and Iraq; lists of issues for Cabo Verde, Denmark, and Republic of Korea; as well as lists of themes on additional information for Kazakhstan and Lithuania. Despite the UN’s liquidity situation, these dates are confirmed. A Program of Work and an information note for civil society actors are available on the session page. UN General Assembly: Human Rights Council

The United Nations Human Rights Council, an intergovernmental deliberative body, is scheduled to hold its 61st regular session from February 23 to April 2 in Geneva, Switzerland. According to the session agenda, the Human Rights Council will appoint 17 special procedure mandate holders and hear the presentation of reports by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the UN Secretary-General, special procedures, and other mechanisms on specific countries and topics.

The Council is also scheduled to hold panel discussions on (a.) the role of new and emerging digital technologies in preventing and eliminating female genital mutilation , (b.) the Durban Programme of Action (to combat racism), (c.) human rights and a culture of peace, (d.) sustainable development and human rights, (e.) the rights of persons with disabilities, and (f.) the rights of the child.

Finally, the Council will adopt the outcomes of the Universal Periodic Review of Andorra, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Honduras, Jamaica, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mongolia, and Panama.

Special Procedures and Investigative Bodies

Four of the UN Human Rights Council’s special procedures have country visits scheduled for March. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights provides a list of country visits that are forthcoming, including those scheduled beyond the month of March.

Please note that some of the UN special procedures have postponed country visits “due to the ongoing liquidity crisis.” [For example, the visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls to Saudi Arabia and the visit of the UN Working Group on peasants to Ecuador.]

Other UN Events Relating to Human Rights

  • The UN Human Rights Council’s Annual Day on the Rights of the Child will be celebrated on March 9 in Geneva, Switzerland with the theme “Rights of the child and the human rights violations of children in armed conflict.” Those who wish to attend this event in person must register through the UN’s Indico system. The UN will also broadcast this event on UN WebTV. A special flyer is available to provide children with information on this event and ways they can participate.
  • Following International Women’s Day on March 8, the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 9 to 19. The session will thematically focus on ensuring access to justice for women and girls and review the agreed upon conclusions of the 65th session regarding women’s full and effective participation and decision making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

Regional Bodies

African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights

The African Court on Human & Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) will convene for its 80th Ordinary Session at its Seat in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania from March 2 to 27.

European Committee of Social Rights

The European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR) will hold its 354th session March 16 to March 20 at its headquarters in Strasbourg, France. The agenda and synopsis of the session will be posted on the Committee’s webpage after the conclusion of the session.

European Court of Human Rights

The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will hold a hearing in the case of Tergek v. Turkiye (no. 39631/20) on March 4 at 9:15 am at the Human Rights Building in Strasbourg, France. Court hearings are public and may be viewed via webcast or in person. Pre-registration is required for in-person attendance.

On March 25, the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR will hold another hearing in the case of Kavala v. Turkiye (no. 2170/24) at 9:15 am at the Human Rights Building in Strasbourg, France. Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is holding its 195th Period of Sessions from March 9 to 13 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The 195th Period of Sessions will include hearings on the following themes:

  • Situation of judicial officers
  • Human rights of Roma peoples
  • Effects of practices aimed at changing sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression
  • Impact of illegal mining on economic, social, cultural, and environmental rights

Additionally, the IACHR will hold an open dialogue with civil society organizations to hear about the human rights situation in the region and challenges facing the Inter-American system on March 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. (Salón Roble 1 at the Hotel Intercontinental). The meeting will be open to the public and held in person. Those interested in making a 3-minute intervention must register through the form available on the IACHR webpage by March 2. Inter-American Court of Human Rights

The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) is scheduled to hold its 186th Ordinary Session from March 9 to 13, and its 187th Ordinary Session from March 16 to 20. Agenda and more information forthcoming.

Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

In preparation for its 117th session the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) is accepting civil society reports that may inform its consideration of the regular periodic State reports of: Burkina Faso, Cuba, Cyprus, Serbia, Slovenia, and Uzbekistan. Deadline March 23. Additionally, the deadline to apply for accreditation for in person attendance is April 6.

Universal Periodic Review

In preparation for the 53rd session of the Universal Periodic Review in November 2026, the UPR is accepting written submissions from civil society on: Suriname, Greece, Samoa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Hungary, Papua New Guinea,, Tajikistan, United Republic of Tanzania, Antigua and Barbuda, Eswatini, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, Ireland, and United States of America. Deadline April 10.*

*Please Note: “Regarding the review of the United States of America, please be informed that, in accordance with established modalities, only those organizations that contributed to the 2025 pre-session UPR reports of the USA will be invited to submit an update, as this forms part of the continuation of that exercise. No new call for contributions will be opened. The Secretariat will not admit additional organizations and will not produce new pre-session documentation. Updates provided by eligible organizations will be uploaded as appropriate.”

  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the Secretary-General’s upcoming report on missing persons and children. Deadline March 2.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for States and civil society to respond to an online survey and share good practices and measures to protect and promote civic space in their countries. Deadline March 6.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the Secretary General’s upcoming report titled: “Human Rights in the Administration of Justice – Neurotechnology and other emerging technologies.” OHCHR is looking for submissions relating to how neurotechnology is being utilized in both civil and criminal justice administration. Deadline March 9.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the preparation of a report on “accelerating progress towards preventing adolescent girls’ pregnancy.” Deadline March 9.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking input to aid in the preparation of its 2026 report on “Promotion and protection of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Africans and of people of African descent against excessive use of force and other human rights violations by law enforcement officers through transformative change for racial justice and equality,” pursuant to UN Human Rights Council Resolution 47/21. Deadline March 13.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking input on the social development challenges faced by persons with albinism. Deadline March 13.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the report of the Commissioner pursuant to HRC resolution 58/23 on “Human rights defenders and new and emerging technologies: protecting human rights defenders, including women human rights defenders, in the digital age.” Deadline March 15.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking input to inform a report on terrorism and human rights to be presented at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council. Deadline March 20.
  • The UN Working Group on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the rights of peoples to self-determination has extended the deadline for submissions in response to its call for inputs to inform a thematic report on “the use of mercenaries, mercenary-related actors and private military and/or security companies in organized criminal activities and illicit networks.” The new deadline is March 23.
  • The UN Working Group on the use of mercenaries as a means of violating human rights and impeding the exercise of the rights of peoples to self-determination has extended the deadline for submissions in response to its call for inputs to inform a thematic report that will examine “the use of technology in the operations and activities of mercenaries, mercenary-related actors, and private military and security companies.” The new deadline is March 23.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking input to inform the drafting of a report on good practices and challenges that States face when using the guidelines on the effective implementation of the right to participate in public affairs, with a particular focus on participation in elections. Deadline March 27.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the drafting process of a report on “the impact of drug policies on the rights of women and girls.” Deadline March 31.
  • The 5th session of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent (PFPAD) will take place in Geneva, Switzerland starting April 14, 2026. All interested participants must register by Wednesday, April 8.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform the 2026 report of the Secretary-General on the Rights of Persons belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities, to be presented at the 81st session of the General Assembly. The High Commissioner is seeking relevant information to ensure the realization of the rights of persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities. Deadline April 13.
  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking information related to “concrete actions for the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance and the comprehensive implementation of and follow-up to the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, covering the period from June 2025 to June 2026. Deadline April 30.

Regional Bodies

African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is gathering information to contribute to secondary data collection process under the Study on Prisons, Conditions of detention in Africa. Through its Special Mechanism on Prisons, Conditions of Detention and Police Action in Africa, the Commission has officially commenced the process of secondary data collection for its continental study on prisons and conditions of detention. This study, anchored on Resolution ACHPR/Res.557 (LXXV) 2023, and Article 6 of the African Charter, seeks to identify the root causes of human rights violations in prisons and places of detention, and to provide practical recommendations for reform and paradigm shift across Africa. Email submissions to achpr.SMPrisons@africanunion.org. Deadline March 31.

African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights

The African Court on Human & Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) is accepting submissions of written observations to inform its consideration of Advisory Opinion No. 001/2025 concerning the Obligations of States with respect to the Climate Change Crisis. The deadline for filing such observations has been extended to March 30, 2026. Those interested in filing an amicus brief, who have not specifically been invited by the Court to submit observations, must first apply for leave to submit before filing their observations. The AfCHPR has also issued a call for contributions to a survey that will inform its development of a Strategic Plan for 2026-2028. No deadline specified.

Inter-American Commission on Human Rights

The Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights will prepare a report on the impact of artificial intelligence on human rights in the Americas, including generative artificial intelligence. In this context, the Office of the Special Rapporteur invites civil society organizations, international organizations, human rights defenders, academic institutions, other institutions and interested individuals, as well as private sector companies, to respond, in whole or in part, to the attached questionnaire. Deadline for the submission of written contributions: March 2.
