Human Rights Bodies’ Hearings & Sessions:
January 2026

January 01, 2026

Happy New Year 2026

In January 2026, various universal and regional human rights bodies will assess States’ compliance with their human rights obligations through interactive dialogues, the consideration of State and civil society reports, country visits, and the review of individual complaints. At the United Nations (UN), one treaty body will hold a session to assess States’ progress regarding the rights of children. In addition, thirteen States will undergo their fourth cycle Universal Periodic Review before the Human Rights Council. Finally, four of the UN Human Rights Council’s special procedures will be conducting country visits and three will be holding sessions. At the regional level, the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR), European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) will be in session this month. For more information on each of the bodies mentioned below, please visit the Human Rights Oversight section of the CGLJ Online Resource Hub.

The sessions and country visits taking place in January are listed in the first section below, titled Hearings, Sessions, and Country Visits. UN treaty body sessions may be watched via UN Web TV. The public hearings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) may be viewed via the ECtHR’s website and the IACtHR’s YouTube channel, respectively.

Additionally, in January and February NGOs and civil society actors will have a number of opportunities to submit written information to human rights bodies and mechanisms that are focused on specific countries or human rights issues. These opportunities are listed in the final section below, titled Calls for Input and Submissions.

This post includes events occurring in January 2026, and submission deadlines for January and February 2026. For additional events and deadlines, please visit our Human Rights Calendar.

UN Treaty Bodies

One UN treaty body will convene in January. The full schedule of treaty body sessions can be viewed on the OHCHR Human Rights Mechanisms Calendar. The public activities of the treaty bodies, including constructive dialogues held as part of State party reviews, are webcast on UN Web TV. For information about in-person participation of civil society in the public activities of the treaty bodies, visit the Indico system.

Please note that several of the treaty body webpages currently warn that “due to the United Nations Regular Budget Liquidity Situation,” the agenda, dates, and modality for treaty body sessions may be subject to change. More information may be available by checking the UN’s Indico calendar or by contacting ohchr-tbs@un.org via email.

Committee on the Rights of the Child

The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is scheduled to hold its 100th session from January 12 to 30 in Geneva, Switzerland. During this session, the Committee will consider reports from Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Malaysia, Maldives, Pakistan, Spain, and Uganda. Universal Periodic Review

The Working Group of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) will hold its 51st session from January 19 to 30, 2026 to conduct the fourth cycle reviews for Micronesia, Lebanon, Mauritania, Nauru, Rwanda, Nepal, Saint Lucia, Oman, Austria, Australia, Georgia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Sao Tome and Principe. The Human Rights Council holds three two-week UPR Sessions per year. Thirteen to fourteen countries are reviewed per each session, which amounts to around 42 countries per year. See UPR Sessions. The review of each of the States under review is facilitated by groups of three peer States called “troikas,” which are selected prior to the beginning of the UPR session. The documentation for each State’s review and information on how to obtain accreditation to attend in person are available on the UPR section of the Human Rights Council’s website.

In preparation for the May 2026 UPR of Namibia, Niger, Mozambique, Estonia, Paraguay, Belgium, Denmark, Palau, Somalia, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Latvia, Sierra Leone, and Singapore, the UPR Working Group is receiving national reports from the governments being reviewed in its 52nd session until January 26.

Four of the UN Human Rights Council’s special procedures have country visits scheduled for January. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights provides a list of country visits that are forthcoming, including those scheduled beyond the month of January.
