In December 2025, various universal and regional human rights bodies will assess States’ compliance with their human rights obligations through interactive dialogues, the consideration of State and civil society reports, country visits, and the review of individual complaints. At the United Nations (UN), two treaty bodies will hold sessions to assess States’ progress regarding the elimination of racial discrimination, the elimination of discrimination against women, and the rights of migrant workers. In addition, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples will be hosting special inter-sessional activities in December. Two of the UN Human Rights Council’s special procedures will be conducting country visits to Australia and to Austria as well. Finally, the UN’s annual observance of Human Rights Day occurs this month. At the regional level, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) will continue holding sessions started in November. In addition, the European Committee of Social Rights (ECSR), and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) will be in session this month. The public hearings of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) may be viewed via the AfCHPR’s YouTube page and the IACtHR’s YouTube channel, respectively.
Additionally, in December and January NGOs and civil society actors will have a number of opportunities to submit written information to human rights bodies and mechanisms that are focused on specific countries or human rights issues. These opportunities are listed in the final section below, titled Calls for Input and Submissions.

Hearings, Sessions, and Country Visits
United Nations
The United Nations (UN) observes Human Rights Day every year on December 10.
UN Treaty Bodies
Three UN treaty bodies will convene in December. Two will hold sessions, and the third will host a special commemorative event. The full schedule of treaty body sessions can be viewed on the OHCHR Human Rights Mechanisms Calendar. The public activities of the treaty bodies, including constructive dialogues held as part of State party reviews, are webcast on UN Web TV. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) is scheduled to hold its 116th session in Geneva, Switzerland from November 17 to December 5. According to the NGO Information Note, any civil society organizations wanting to attend the Session must register by November 3. During this session, the Committee will consider reports from Burundi, Guatemala, Maldives, New Zealand, Sweden and Tunisia; lists of issues prior to reporting for Laos, Japan, Panama and Tonga; and the need for urgent action procedures or early warning measures. An annotated provisional agenda is available on the session page.
The Committee will also hold informal meetings and lunchtime briefings with NGO representatives who have submitted written contributions. NGO representatives must register for these separately via email to the Secretariat at ohchr-cerd@un.org.
On December 4, the Committee will hold a high level commemorative event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD). According to the programme, those interested in attending the event in person must register via the Indico system. Members of the public may also view the event via UN Web TV.
On December 5, the CERD will hold a joint event with the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers (CMW) to publicly launch their new general recommendations providing guidelines for eradicating xenophobia towards migrants and others perceived as such. Those interested in attending are asked to register via the UN’s Indico system.
Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) is scheduled to hold an event to mark one year since its adoption of General Recommendation No. 40: Mapping Opportunities to Advance the Implementation of CEDAW’s General Recommendation on the Equal and Inclusive Representation of Women in Decision-Making Systems. The event will take place on December 8, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Those interested in participating can register via the UN’s Indico site.
Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families
The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers (CMW) is scheduled to hold its 41st session from December 1 to 11 in Geneva, Switzerland. During the 41st session, the Committee will consider the second periodic reports of Honduras, Indonesia, and Mauritania. During this same session, the Committee will also adopt a list of issues for Colombia, as well as lists of issues prior to reporting for Albania and Uganda. The programme of work for the session provides specific dates and times for these activities. The information note for civil society organizations describes the various opportunities for civil society organizations to engage with the Committee during the session. Those wishing to attend in person must register individually online through the Indico system. All public meetings will also be webcasted on UN Web TV.

Special Procedures
Two of the UN Human Rights Council’s special procedures have country visits scheduled for December. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights provides a list of country visits that are forthcoming, including those scheduled beyond the month of December.
- The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention is scheduled to visit Australia from December 1 to 12.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism is scheduled to visit Austria from December 2 to 9.
Please note that some of the UN special procedures have postponed country visits “due to the ongoing liquidity crisis.” [For example, the visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls to Saudi Arabia and the visit of the UN Working Group on peasants to Ecuador.]
Subsidiary Expert Mechanisms
- The UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples will host an inter-sessional expert seminar from December 3 to 5 in Geneva. The theme matches that of its next annual study: “the rights of Indigenous Peoples in conflict and post-conflict situations.” Those wishing to attend may register through the Indico system.

African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights
The African Court on Human & Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) will convene for its 79th Ordinary Session at its Seat in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania from November 10 to December 5.
African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child
The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC) is scheduled to hold its 46th Ordinary Session from November 26 to December 6 in Maseru, Kingdom of Lesotho. This session will bring together experts, stakeholders, and representatives from across the continent to discuss the state of child rights in Africa, review reports from member states, and engage in dialogue on enhancing the welfare and protection of children. European Committee of Social Rights
Inter-American Court of Human Rights
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) is scheduled to hold its 184th Ordinary Session from November 17 to December 5. During this Session the court will hold deliberations.

Human Rights Committee
The Human Rights Committee is the body of independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) by its States parties. In preparation for its 145th session, this Committee is accepting written contributions from NGOs and other civil society actors to inform the Committee’s assessment of reports following up on the most recent concluding observations issued to Botswana, Cambodia, and Ukraine. Deadline December 1.
Also in preparation for its 145th session, the Committee is accepting written contributions from NGOs and other civil society actors to inform the Committee’s adoption of lists of issues prior to reporting for Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Hungary, Mexico and Senegal. Deadline January 5.
The Human Rights Committee has also issued a call for input to inform its drafting of a General Comment on Freedom of Association. Deadline December 19.
Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
In preparation for its 79th session, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) is accepting written contributions from NGOs and other civil society actors to inform the Committee’s assessment of State reports from Australia, Austria, Georgia, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan, and Uruguay, as well as follow-up reports from Lithuania and Tajikistan. Deadline January 13.
Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
In preparation for its 92nd session, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW Committee) is accepting written contributions from NGOs and other civil society actors to inform the Committee’s assessment of State reports from Argentina, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Iraq, Lesotho, Lithuania, The Netherlands, and Viet Nam, as well as follow-up reports from Lithuania and Tajikistan. Deadline January 5.
In preparation for the second portion of its Pre-Sessional Working Group for the 94th session, this Committee is also accepting written contributions from NGOs and other civil society actors to inform its adoption of a list of issues for Bangladesh as well as lists of issues prior to reporting for Barbados, Burundi, Guinea, Haiti, Jordan, Mali, Micronesia, Nigeria, and Tanzania. Deadline January 5.
Finally, the CEDAW Committee is currently finalizing an Addendum to General Recommendation No. 30 (2013) on women in conflict prevention, conflict and post conflict situations in relation to the Women Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, and has issued a call for input for all interested parties to submit written comments through the CEDAW online submission system. Deadline December 9.
Committee on the Rights of the Child
In preparation for its Pre-Sessional Working Group for the 103rd pre-session, the Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is accepting written contributions from NGOs and other civil society actors to inform its adoption of a list of issues prior to reporting for Australia, Barbados, Botswana, Chad, Lebanon, Trinidad and Tobago. The Committee requests that written contributions be submitted through the Child Rights Connect website. Deadline December 1.
Committee on Enforced Disappearances
The Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED), together with the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), has issued a call for input to inform a joint statement on enforced disappearances in the context of transnational repression. Deadline January 31.

Special Procedures
- The UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights has issued a call for input to inform a report on agri-business, food security and human rights. The call for input delineates the key questions and types of input/comments that the working group is seeking. Deadline December 1.
- The UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights has also issued a call for input to inform a thematic study on issues related to Indigenous Peoples’ free, prior and informed consent (FPIC), business, and human rights. This study will be presented as an addendum report to the Human Rights Council in its 62th session in June 2026. Inputs can be country-specific or of a general nature. Deadline December 1.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on counter-terrorism and human rights has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming thematic report on the definitions of “terrorism”, “terrorist organisation” and “violent extremism.” Deadline December 1.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on toxics and human rights has issued a call for input to inform his upcoming visit to Mexico in March 2026. Deadline for submissions is December 5.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food has issued a call for input to inform a thematic report that focuses on “interlinkages between land rights and the right to food, with a particular focus on the voices, experiences, and insights of civil society actors working on the ground, including small-scale food producers, Indigenous Peoples, fishers, pastoralists, and youth.” Deadline December 5.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to a healthy environment has issued a call for input to inform her upcoming visit to Ireland in February 2026. Deadline for submissions is December 10.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming report on “specific acts and methods of torture and ill-treatment committed against Palestinians” and “structural or collective practices that intentionally inflict severe physical or mental pain or suffering for prohibited purposes, including punishment, intimidation, coercion, and discrimination.” Deadline December 10.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar has issued a call for input to inform a forthcoming conference room paper on accountability for grave human rights violations in Myanmar. While the Special Rapporteur welcomes information on other topics, in the call for input he has provided a list of topics that he is particularly interested in receiving information on. Submissions need not summarize public information already available to the Special Rapporteur. Deadline December 15.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming thematic report on “the actual and potential contributions of transforming food systems to climate change mitigation, adaptation, prevention and responses to loss and damage, and human rights protection.” The call for input includes detailed questions the rapporteur is seeking to examine. Deadline December 15.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants has issued a call for input to inform a second report on the topic of “externalization of migration governance and its effect on the human rights of migrants.” The call for input provides further detail on the objectives of the report and key questions the rapporteur hopes to address. Deadline December 19.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming report that will provide “an overall update on the human rights situation in Iran,” as well as a more focused examination of “how Iran’s drug policies impact the full spectrum of human rights.” Deadline December 20.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on discrimination against persons with leprosy (Hansen’s disease) has issued a call for input to inform a thematic report titled “Memory, and Belonging: Realizing cultural, social, and economic rights in former leprosy colonies and settlements.” A detailed questionnaire is provided in the call for input. Deadline December 31.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence has issued a call for inputs to inform an upcoming thematic report that “will seek to examine both opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies in the context of transitional justice, across its five pillars, namely, truth, justice, reparation, memorialization, and guarantees of non-recurrence.” Deadline January 9.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression has issued a call for input to inform her upcoming visit to Germany in January 2026. Deadline for submissions is January 9.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming report on the right to health for women and girls in Afghanistan. Further details on key questions and on how to submit information to the rapporteur securely are included in the call for input. Deadline January 9.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on toxics and human rights has issued a call for input to inform a thematic report on forever chemicals (PFAS) and human rights. The call for input outlines the chief objectives of the report and identifies key questions the rapporteur would like to address. Deadline January 9.
- The UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity has issued a call for input to inform a thematic report on violence and discrimination experienced by lesbian, bisexual, and queer (LBQ) women. The call for input provides further detail on key questions the rapporteur seeks to address. Deadline January 15.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming thematic report on “Health as an enabler of dignity.” The call for input provides further detail on key questions the rapporteur is seeking to explore. Deadline January 15.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence has issued a call for inputs to inform an upcoming thematic report on “the question of the challenges of denial, negationism and revisionism of serious violations of human rights and humanitarian law in transitional justice contexts.” The call for input provides further detail on key questions and the type of information the rapporteur is seeking. Deadline January 16.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, has issued a call for input to inform her upcoming visit to Chad in February 2026. Deadline for submissions is January 23.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to education has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming thematic report on that “intends to take stock of the implementation of international standards and guidelines, national legislation and policies, as well as promising practices, aimed to ensure that the substantive content of the right to education is conceived, designed and implemented with the view to guarantee the full enjoyment of the right to education for all.” The Special Rapporteur is inviting input from civil society organizations, academics, and educators, as well as from children and young people. Deadline January 25.
- The UN Working Group on discrimination against women and girls has issued a call for input to inform its upcoming visit to Armenia in March 2026. Deadline for submissions is January 30.
- The UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, has issued a call for input to inform an upcoming thematic report on the rights of migrant, refugee, asylum-seeking and stateless children who are victims of trafficking or at risk of trafficking in persons. The call for input provides further detail on key questions the rapporteur seeks to address. Deadline January 30.
Investigative Bodies
- The UN Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic invites submissions of information and documentation to inform the report that it must submit to the UN Human Rights Council in March 2026. The type of information the Commission of Inquiry is particularly interested in, as well as instructions on how to submit information, are detailed in the Commission’s Call for Submissions. Deadline December 1.
- The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel has issued a broad call for submissions of information concerning acts of killing and causing serious bodily or mental harm committed by any State or non-State actor. No deadline is specified, but this information will be used for a report that will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2026.
- The UN Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar has issued a press release calling for all those who witnessed or have direct information about an airstrike on a boarding school complex in Thayat Tabin village, Kyauktaw Township in Rakhine State, on September 12, 2025 to please share their evidence. The press release also contains instructions on how to share information with the Mechanism. No deadline specified.
- The Fact-Finding Mission on the situation in North and South Kivu provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (OFFMK) has issued a call for submissions of information related to all alleged human rights violations and abuses committed in the context of the latest and ongoing escalation of hostilities in January 2025 in the provinces of North and South Kivu. No deadline specified.

- The UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples has issued a call for inputs to inform an upcoming study on “the rights of Indigenous Peoples in conflict and post-conflict situations.” Deadline January 31.
Other UN Human Rights Bodies
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has announced the re-opening of its call for contributions to the crowd-sourced Romani Memory Map in the Americas. The upcoming third edition of the Map prioritize the inclusion of countries not yet represented, while also broadening the scope of memory sites to be documented. Deadline for submissions is December 20.
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform a report on conscientious objection to military service. Deadline January 15.
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform a report on the impact of anti-personnel mines on the full enjoyment of all human rights. Deadline January 15.
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform a report on “actionable pathways in mobilizing sufficient climate financing and associated challenges and opportunities in the pursuit of the full realization of human rights for all people.” Deadline January 16.
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for input to inform a report on addressing the challenges and barriers to the full realization and enjoyment of the human rights of the people of the Marshall Islands stemming from the State’s nuclear legacy. The deadline for submissions has been extended to January 31, 2026.
- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for inputs to inviting contributions for a forthcoming report on “Cooperation with Georgia.” The deadline for submissions has been extended to January 31, 2026.

The African Court on Human & Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) has issued a call for contributions to a survey that will inform its development of a Strategic Plan for 2026-2028. No deadline specified.
