Human Rights Bodies’ Hearings & Sessions:
June 2025

In June 2025, various regional and universal human rights bodies will hold sessions, hearings, or meetings to continue their oversight and adjudication of human rights issues. At the United Nations, various bodies will be in session or hold meetings, including the Human Rights Council and its working group on transnational corporations; the Chairpersons of Human Rights Treaty Bodies; the treaty body on civil and political rights and the treaty body on the elimination of discrimination against women; and State parties to the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The OHCHR and special procedures will conduct country visits to the Federated States of Micronesia (cultural rights), Bosnia and Herzegovina (human rights defenders), Iraq (minority issues), and Peru (toxics and human rights). In addition, several mandate holders are seeking inputs for upcoming visits, including visits to Brazil (contemporary forms of slavery, June 3), Chile (rights to peaceful assembly and of association, June 10), and Zimbabwe (discrimination against women and girls and gender equality, June 13).
Special procedures have issues additional calls for input with deadlines in June 2025, including for submissions related to racial discrimination and the implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (June 1), human rights impacts of administrative measures to counter terrorism (June 1), racial discrimination and the implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action” (June 3), investigation and prevention of unlawful killings by law enforcement officials (June 6), externalization of migration and the impact on the human rights of migrants (June 6), concentration of corporate power in global food systems and its implications for the realization of the right to food (June 12), freedom of assembly and association rights (June 16), integrated approaches to the promotion and protection of human rights and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the global level (June 18), the human rights situation in Burundi (June 30), corporations and international solidarity (June 30), biodiversity and human rights (June 30), and local government and human rights (June 30).
Additional calls for input have been issued by the Committee on the Rights of the Child and several UN investigative bodies.
At the regional level, the following bodies will be in session: the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the European Committee of Social Rights, and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
United Nations
General Assembly: Human Rights Council
Human Rights Council Sessions
The Human Rights Council will hold its 59th regular session from June 16 to July 9, in Geneva. According to its agenda, the Council will hear the annual report of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as reports of the OHCHR, the Secretary-General, and special procedure mandate holders. The documentation for the session is available online. The Council will appoint mandate holders to various special procedures, including one member of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development (from Latin American and Caribbean States) and one member of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (from Asia-Pacific States). The Council will host panels on subjects including women’s rights, the adverse impacts of climate change, safe drinking water, and technical cooperation and capacity building. The Council will consider and adopt the final outcomes of the Universal Periodic Reviews of Angola, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, El Salvador, Fiji, the Gambia, Iraq, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Italy, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, San Marino, and Slovenia. An organizational meeting for the 59th regular session will be held on June 2.
Special Procedures
Various UN special procedures have activities scheduled in June. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights provides lists of country visits that are underway and country visits that are forthcoming.
- The Special Rapporteur on cultural rights will visit the Federated States of Micronesia from June 2 to 13.
- The Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders will visit Bosnia and Herzegovina from June 10 to 20.
- The Special Rapporteur on minority issues will visit Iraq from June 15 to 23.
- The Special Rapporteur on toxics and human rights will visit Peru from June 16 to 26.
Other Working Groups, Subsidiary Expert Mechanisms, Forums
In preparation for its 11th session, scheduled for October 20 to 24, the open-ended intergovernmental working group on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights (OEIGWG) will hold its second and third thematic consultations from June 3 to 5, in Geneva. Treaty Bodies
General
Various UN treaty bodies will convene in June. The full schedule can be viewed on the OHCHR Human Rights Mechanisms Calendar. Treaty bodies’ public activities, including constructive dialogues held as part of State party reviews, are webcast on UN Web TV. The 37th meeting of the Chairpersons of Human Rights Treaty Bodies will be held June 2 to 6, in Geneva. More information is available in the provisional agenda and the programme of work. The agenda includes a public meeting with State parties; public consultations with UN entities, specialized agencies, national human rights institutes, and civil society organizations; and private consultations with senior UN officials and other UN human rights mechanisms. The agenda also includes private discussions of new developments in the UN liquidity crisis and its impact on human rights treaty bodies; the implementation by the treaty bodies of the Guidelines against Intimidation or Reprisals (San José Guidelines); and the implementation by the treaty bodies of the guidelines on the independence and impartiality of members of the human rights treaty bodies (the Addis Ababa guidelines). In addition, the agenda includes intersessional activities, including joint meetings with other mechanisms and a consultation with Michael O’Flaherty, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe.
Human Rights Committee
The Human Rights Committee will hold its 144th session June 23 to July 17, in Geneva, Switzerland. The Committee will consider reports from Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Kazakhstan, Latvia, North Macedonia, Spain, and Vietnam.
Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women
The Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women will hold its 91st session from June 16 to July 4, 2025, in Geneva. The Committee will consider reports from Afghanistan, Botswana, Chad, Ireland, Mexico, San Marino and Thailand. The Committee will also adopt concluding observations on the earlier reports of Fiji, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu. More information is available in the provisional agenda and programme of work.
Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
The State parties to the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) will hold their 31st meeting on June 2, in New York. The State parties will elect nine members to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) to replace members whose terms will expire in January 2026. Committee on Enforced Disappearances
The State parties to the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance will hold their 8th meeting on June 16, in New York. The State parties will elect five members to the Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) to replace members whose terms will expire on June 30. Committee on Migrant Workers
The State parties to the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICRMW) will hold their 12th meeting on June 24, in New York. The State parties will elect seven members of the Committee on the Protection of Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW) to replace members who terms will expire on December 31. Committee on the Rights of the Child
The Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) seeks submissions on the draft of the general comment No. 27 on children’s right to access to justice and to an effective remedy. The deadline for submissions is June 30.
UN Investigative Bodies
The Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan (FFM Sudan) invites submissions relevant to its mandate. For submissions to be considered in the current reporting cycle, the deadline is June 30.
The Group of Human Rights Experts on Nicaragua (GHREN) invites submissions of information related to the “alleged human rights violations and abuses committed in Nicaragua since April 2018, including the possible gender dimensions and structural root causes of such violations and abuses and identification of those responsible.” No deadline is provided.
The Fact-Finding Mission on the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela requests submissions on issues including serious human rights abuses within the framework of political repression. No is deadline provided.
The Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic invites submissions of information and documentation relevant to its mandate. Submissions for its annual September mandated report are due June 1 and submissions for its annual March mandated report are due December 1.
